In this guest lecture, the Study Program of English Literature, Department of Language and Literature, Faculty of Cultural Studies (FCS) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) raised the theme of ‘Short Story Review’ by Tia Setiadi as the speaker. He is a writer, a poet, and also an essayist.
This event was hosted by Sri Utami Budi, M.A., as the moderator through the Zoom platform, attended by 40 participants who were lecturers and several students of the Study Program of English Literature who took Creative Writing courses. This guest lecture took place on Saturday (31/10/2020) at 10.00 a.m.
At the beginning of his presentation, Tia Setiadi discussed the Art of Prose Writing, Learning from Techniques, and the Success of the Novel the Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. He discussed the themes, characters’ creation, language magic, choosing the point of view of the Alchemist novel and setting, and the Chinese box technique. The presentation was closed with a question-and-answer session.
This Guest Lecture aimed to provide students with enlightenment in writing good short stories.
Tia Setiadi said, “Simplicity in writing is important.”

Pada kuliah tamu kali ini, Program Studi Sastra Inggris, Jurusan Bahasa dan Sastra Fakultas Ilmu Budaya (FIB) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) mengangkat tema ‘Short Story Review’ (Mengulas Cerita Pendek) oleh Tia Setiadi sebagai pembicara. Ia merupakan seorang sastrawan, penyair, dan juga esais.
Acara ini dipandu oleh Sri Utami Budi, M.A., sebagai moderator melalui platform Zoom, dihadiri oleh 40 peserta yang merupakan dosen dan beberapa mahasiswa Program Studi Sastra Inggris yang mengambil mata kuliah Creative Writing. Kuliah tamu ini berlangsung pada Sabtu (31/10/20) pukul 10.00 WIB.
Di awal presentasinya, Tia Setiadi membahas tentang Seni Menulis Prosa, Belajar dari Teknik dan Kesuksesan Novel Sang Alkemis karya Paulo Coelho. Ia membahas tentang tema, penciptaan tokoh, keajaiban bahasa, pemilihan sudut pandang dari novel Sang Alkemis tersebut dan latar, serta teknik kotak Cina. Materi ditutup dengan sesi tanya jawab yang diajukan oleh para peserta.
Kuliah Tamu ini bertujuan untuk memberikan mahasiswa pencerahan dalam menulis cerita pendek yang baik.
Tia Setiadi mengatakan, “Kesederhanaan dalam menulis itu penting”.
